How To Care For Your Jewellery

27 Mar 2019

We often don’t realise how much harm we are doing to our jewellery. For most of us jewellery is a treasured addition so it is important that it is cared for properly to ensure that it always looks as if it is brand new. Looking after your jewellery is easy, and these simple tips will help you to cut back on maintenance and allow you more time to show off your entire collection.

Store it properly

To ensure that you don’t get any scratches to the surface of your jewels make sure you store your earrings in a jewellery box or some place with padding. This should then be placed out of sight from the sun in a darkened spot. This will ensure that your earrings will last longer as they are protected from any potential damage which could be caused to them if they were to be lying around.

Treat them like treasure

It is best to only wear your earrings during the times you really want to show them off. Wearing earrings during activities such as sport or going to the beach could cause them to get dirty and damaged faster. This also means not wearing them to bed as earrings can easily get caught in your hair, sheets, and can snag more easily. Oils from a person’s skin can also corrode earrings if they are worn for a long amount of time.

Avoid bright light

Most gems can fade and loose colour when being exposed to sun over a period of time. It is best to keep jewellery out of light places when possible. This includes both sunlight and display lighting.

Clean them carefully

We recommend using a gentle solution such as warm water and a toothbrush to clean delicate jewellery. It can also be polished with a cloth afterwards for extra shine. However if you have an extra-favourite piece it is best to get it professionally cleaned every 6 to 12 months, depending on how much you wear it.

Avoid products

If you like to wear perfume, make sure that you spray it before applying your jewellery. It is also important to apply perfume away from areas where the jewellery will be worn as perfume tends to tarnish the surface. Finally, we recommend that you always take your earrings out while showering as shampoo and conditioner may react with and corrode the metal.
